Fisher Island Resort
Fisher Island is simply the last word in
luxury and splendor. It is a 216-acre private island
residential community that has few equals in the world of
first-class resorts.
A creation of real estate developer Carl Graham Fisher, he
turned his attention to this piece of property when
Miami's ship channel sliced through to the ocean in 1905.
Fisher Island was bought from Dana A. Dorsey, South
Florida's first black millionaire. However, political
pressure stopped Fisher's constant attempts to secure
state and federal dredging permits. The battle raged into
the 1930's.
The Island was originally built in the 1920's by William
and Rosamund Vanderbilt for use as a retreat from the
harsh winters of the northeast. For the 21st century,
Fisher Island has been restored and re-created to continue
its long history as a world-class private island
residence. The grandeur of the past is reborn in every
detail of the local ambience and beauty.
Vogue magazine wrote: "Fisher Island is centered on the
former mansion of William K. Vanderbilt, a 1920's
confection used for wintering by the great grandson of the
Commodore. There is no mistaking this island for any other
land form”.
The Vanderbilt mansion forms the main Island Club area
with the private Ocean Beach Club right near. Nearby is
the Tennis Center. Some of the most special accommodations
